"Yeah, I was open minded about it till I got to the price, 25 billion or something. Insane when you consider it will dry up or become saline in a relatively short period. Think what we could do with 25 billion. It's the way the people who want…"

Geeks Discuss Greening the Desert

This is funny, but also informative. http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1154298Some of the ideas might be interesting to discuss. One puts forward the theory that the sahara is 'naturally' a desert and there's no point in trying to change that. Someone else then says "But were the atmospheric conditions so different when the Sahara was green, 6000 years ago? I've read about Earth tilt changing at this…See More

Wendy Campbell-Purdie - Woman Against the Desert

Wendy Campbell Purdie started the Green Belt across the Sahara, but died before she could finish it.In 1959 she bought a one-way ticket to North Africa and set to work planting trees. On forty-five acres of desert in Morocco (Tiznit), she planted 2,000 trees, and four years later they were twelve feet high. She proved that this manmade strip of oasis would change the climate (increase the surface humidity) by growing wheat and barley in the shelter the trees provided. Then she went to Algeria,…See More

Tree Planting stories

[Anyone have a story to add?] Hi I thought it might be good to put in stories I got from others of their tree plantings. I had a friend from Australia who did a government job after leaving school, and he planted about 100 trees along a stretch of road, He went back not long ago and they were all fully grown. He said it was amazing to see.  Here's one I got from someone in an email back in 2000:Years ago my best friend and I decided that for her wedding we would give everyone something…See More

Using the website above we hope to plant 1000 Trees in Ireland towards the goal.

While I have little time for the UN, many of its links are useful. It could also help get us publicity and increase awareness of our project, so if you would like to participate please join under Ireland (even if you live elsewhere and will plant elsewhere).

all the best,

Donal

Thesis completed – What is the potential for reducing atmospheric CO2 levels through solar-desalinated irrigated vegetation of the Sahara and Arabian deserts?

I have finally completed my MSc thesis: What is the potential for reducing atmospheric CO2 levels through solar-desalinated irrigated vegetation of the Sahara and Arabian deserts? The purpose of this thesis was to estimate how much carbon could be sequestered annually in the Sahara and Arabian deserts if those deserts were irrigated with seawater that had been desalinated using CSP, allowing the establishment of vegetation and formation of soil. Successful sequestration of carbon in… Continue

Give me two people, one with seeds in their hand, one with an axe.I bet the one with the seeds can plant 40 trees before the person with the axe can fell one, let alone ship and use the tree
